INTRODUCTION Excavations at the site of Pievina (Tuscany, Italy) were conducted under the direction of Kim Bowes, Marielena Ghisleni, and Emanuele Vaccaro (under the auspices of Cornell University and Universitá di Grosetto) in 2009. The focus was to examine remains of smaller-scale settlements, presumably those related to peasant (or at least lesselite) occupation. The area underwent periods of development, modification, and decay broadly divided into two temporal brackets:
